Everyone born in this world, as a human being, will have leisure time to spend in the midst of his work. The question that arises here is how he spends it usefully. Some of the easiest ways of spending time are watching television, listening to music, roaming, chatting with others, etc. Next to these are indulging himself in sports activities, dancing, singing etc. The difference between the former and the latter categories is that the latter activities need our concentration and focus. If one is just saying that reading books does not need our concentration, then you can easily identify that the person who says it, is not the one who ‘glues himself to a chair and read’ sort.
The hobby of reading books falls into the second category mentioned above, because it definitely needs our concentration and focus. If we watch a television or a movie, it does not require our concentration, because whether we like it or not, the scenes change constantly, whereas while reading books, without our focus, we could not grasp the content and neither could you move onto the next line.
There are differences between reading a study oriented book and reading a fiction. Study oriented books, though informative, may be somewhat dry. This is where many of the people get regretted in reading books and develop a phobia towards books. Reading fictions or real life incidents are more fascinating. It develops our visualisation power and takes us to those places where we have never been before or would never visit in future. Only a good reader of fictions could find no difference between watching a movie and reading a book, because he feels alike in both the ways. From the view of others, a person who is reading a fiction is considered to be one who is sitting idle throughout the day, but actually he would be undergoing various emotions, which only he could feel.
According to many, reading fictions improve our vocabulary and our knowledge over English language. Instead of looking into the dictionary, time and again, for clarification of words, if we start reading fictions, it is an easier way of memorising the meaning of a word, since it occurs often in the story, that we could decipher the meaning by the flow of the story.
Also, opportunities are there for us to know regarding the different writing styles of various authors. For example, Dan Brown who is the author of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and three other books has his unique style of writing each novel in such a way that it completely revolves around a single day or two. All his four books so far have become controversial.
If we take the case of Jeanne Katheline Rowling, more popularly known as J.K.Rowling, her novels revolve around a single person who is transforming as a teenager from his boyhood and whatever he see, feel, think and dream are the only factors depicted in the book. It causes a sensation as if we have been seated inside his brain and reading his mind. Each of the author’s books has the details of his one year’s adventures at his wizard school.
If these are the cases of the first two authors, some of the novels of Sidney Sheldon revolve around an entire century, depicting the lives of four generations of a family. Thus we can differentiate the writing skills of each author and awe ourselves.
Generally, many of the books has been written based on some locality and it needs deep research by the authors to give details about the particular locality before writing and it would be really very interesting for us to find out which of these information are real and whichever are imaginary.
Today in a fancy world, many of the people have stopped reading books because of them being attracted towards the modern lifestyle around them and considering reading books as out of fashion. They watch English movies and channels and think that they have improved their vocabulary in a faster and easier way. But they fail to notice that they lag in their English power and have been driven to a situation that neither they could admire and understand the writings of Shakespeare nor could they understand the cruelties in the speeches of George Bush.
Reading books is the cheapest way of spending time. All we got to do is just walk into a library and grab our favourite ones and start reading. It is also the only hobby that we could carry on without bothering others. Thus I conclude that, for some, reading books is the stupidest hobby in the world whereas I am a person who think it is the stupendous hobby there in the world and would make my friends also to feel the same in which I have achieved somewhat so far.
